Modern Day Martha

Martha and Mary.

I see you both.

I’ve been you both.

Martha, in her serving stance, and Mary, in her seated stance, both beautiful in the eyes of Jesus.

Martha stood out to me differently this time reading, though.

I hear her edgy, irritated undertones; maybe a tone of jealousy, an attitude of resentment oozing from her stance… “Lord, is it of no concern to You that my sister has left me to do the serving alone?”

Truth is, I can completely relate.

What I love most is how Jesus responds. No guilt or shame, just beautiful truth…Jesus lovingly told her, don’t worry about all of those things, it’s just that “Mary has CHOSEN the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Oh yeah, we can choose.

And although scripture doesn’t tell us, I believe, I want to believe, that Martha dropped what she was doing and went and sat down beside Mary.

We can, too.

Any other Modern Day Martha mama out there?

Know that you’re awesome.

Know that your heart to serve and do and make beautiful is treasured, and desperately needed in its designated time.

But Mary’s chosen the good part, and we must, too.

How can we Martha’s, who tend to let what’s screaming in front of us distract us, apply this to our today?

It’s so simple we might just miss it.

When you hear Jesus calling you to sit with Him, go.

Just go.

And remember this…

It’s okay if the lunches don’t get packed tonight, you can do them tomorrow.

It’s okay that the toys aren’t tidied during nap time, you can get to it tonight when everyone’s in bed.

It’s okay that the birthday party isn’t perfectly mimicked like the Pinterest blogs, or that the cake’s not homemade or special ordered.

It’s okay if they don’t all have coordinated outfits and perfect faces 24/7.

It’s okay that the laundry is piled up, and the dishes are in the sink.

It’s okay that the floors aren’t perfectly swept and sterile and immaculate.

It’s okay to drop the dish towel, the broom and dustpan for a few minutes.

It’s okay to put the busyness, calendars, the worries of life, aside.

Because Jesus is calling, and you must go.

“As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.””

““Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy.”
