Spirit, Soul, and Body

There are many bible teachers that teach on this principle in scripture, but my favorite person who explains Spirit, Soul and Body in a way that the Holy Spirit made it come alive to me, is Andrew Wommack. He has a way of simplifying things for understanding, all while not quenching the power of the supernatural.
Go look him up, at awmi.net, or on YouTube for his full teachings on this… what I share is just the tippy tip of the iceberg.

Spirit
Our spirit is the part of us that was transformed at salvation. The Bible shows us that we are sealed, meaning nothing can get to our spirit to change the state of it; this is the part of us that is awakened, reunited to God when we accepted Jesus as Savior.
The beauty of our Spirit is that we have nothing to do with it. It supernaturally changed effortlessly, by Gods power immediately by God at receiving of Christ as your Savior.
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”

Soul
Your soul is the battle ground. Your soul is completely separate from your spirit the Bible shows us.
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/1th.5.23.NKJV
Just like your body, your soul was not automatically transformed at Salvation.
It must be renewed, repaired, reprogrammed, and tended to.
Your soul contains your heart, your mind, your emotions, your memory, your belief system.
Also like your body, your soul can have battle marks; deep, rotting, gaping wounds where the enemy does his stealing, killing and destroying in the world, and to you.
It’s in your soul, in this unseen place that the enemy cowardly hides an speaks, attempting to appear powerful.
In the hurtful words of others, he is the accuser whispering divisive destruction.
In the physical pain of a broken heart that someone likely unknowingly caused in our life, it’s him that’s there poking at that wound as it tries to heal, reopening it with reminders, exaggerations, replaying over and over in your mind that experience, to cause you pain, shame, anger, bitterness over and over and over again. It’s actually there that he feasts on it, growing stronger and stronger in your mind, in your heart, and your soul…the more you agree with his deception instead of God’s truth.
He hides in the soul behind unforgiveness, bitterness, resentment, anger, and pain. He lurks in the waters even of some of our ‘boundaries,’ I believe.
If the issues of the soul are not allowed to be confronted with the Love of God, if we stand in the way and we won’t let God at our souls to heal all that’s happened, to correct and repair all the things they will never say they are sorry for, you’ll stop growing here.
Not because God is not able to fix it, but because He needs your cooperation. He needs you to be willing to let it go.
He needs you to read His word and renew your mind to what is true, and break agreement with the lies we’ve picked up along the way.
Sometimes we hold onto those soul wounds like giant teddy bears…we get comfort from others because of them and that helps a little, we think. We carry them around on our hips, and people can’t help but to see them, to notice them, and to ask about them.
But if we aren’t willing to confront some discomfort, have some hard conversations with ourselves, allow ourselves to sit with God with some of those ‘triggers,’ then His light cannot touch it. The darkness will continue to feast on it, to strengthen, and to grow.
I’m reminded of something one of my best friends said to me years ago, “God won’t let you skip a step. He’s too wonderful to let something linger that needs to be settled.”
He cannot heal what you will not show Him willingly. God will NOT heal your soul wounds if you won’t talk to HIM about the hurts. He will not force you to put down the teddy… to let Him fix you any more that He will force you to receive salvation. God has set before us blessings or curses, life or death, YOU choose so that you and your descendants MAY LIVE.
“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.””
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/deu.30.19-20.NKJV
Soul healing cannot happen without getting to know God personally, by getting to know God’s word.
You must read it.
You must renew your mind.
The Mind
Remember, when you received salvation, your mind, and your memory, your experiences and all you’ve learned was not immediately erased, and the Word of God was not downloaded automatically. We must renew our minds to what the Bible says about who we are now, as believers in Jesus Christ. We have to be willing to have been wrong, and be willing to work out all of our belief system with Christ as the foundation now, with our In Him identity front and center.
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Practical Learning, Obtaining Knowledge Practical Learning, Obtaining Knowledge
The Bible tells us exactly how to think…
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”
Philippians 4:8-9 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/php.4.8-9.NKJV
The Bible also tells us that we have the mind of Christ:
“For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.”
I Corinthians 2:16 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/1co.2.16.NKJV
But I do not minimize the labor in this task. God ALWAYS meets you to help, because you will need every bit of Him. Jesus won the war, and He FINISHED all things for us in the spiritual realm. The battle that Paul talks about with darkness is in knowing the fullness of the win, knowing the fullness of Him, knowing, in fullness, how finished and final the work of Christ really is, and that being a bigger reality than what is tangibly in front of you in this moment…
No matter what, when renewing your mind, never give up. Never ever.

Body
I believe that our body is important to God. I believe God wants us all to experience walking in divine health, stewarding our bodies in a way that keeps us able to serve Him and walk out the length of our days.
I believe in fasting, eating well, identifying and resisting gluttony, and understanding the science behind our bodies. God helps me understand and continue to grow stronger in this area.
But, equally as important, I do believe that when it comes to the principles of spirit, soul and body, our body is symbolic of the natural, the everyday practical life we live.
We want to ‘walk in the spirit,’ not ‘in the flesh,’ and I believe the focus of the soul, learning who God is and His perfect love for us is what allows the spirit within us to bust out into our everyday life.
To overcome the soul hurts takes the focus off of us, off of our lives, and onto the things of heaven.
So we can see other people.
Loving other people like Jesus loves us and healed us.
Transitioning from a self pleasing mindset to that of the Kingdom of Heaven, right here on earth.
The Body is a Temple
The body, your physical body, is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and the Bible tells us this.
Sometimes, we think this verse is saying “the body is a temple, make it look amazing and perfect and worship the body itself,” but I’d like to share with God showed me.
The body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Thanks to Jesus Christ, when we are saved, we receive God’s Holy Spirit in our hearts, and now our bodies, the physical body, houses Him, and has the ability to be His hands and feet.
Do we worship the temple itself? Well, some of us do. Some of us worship the priests, the sacrifices, the processes, the building itself more than the Spirit of God that made it a temple…
It’s also important to remember the body must be able to function in the capacity that the Holy Spirit housed within needs it to function to do that which the Lord wants done through your body.
Is your physical body able to actually do what is required from the call of God on your life?

The primary way that God taught me these things and changed my life and my behaviors and my actions and my thoughts, were by revelation knowledge- the active, living, Holy Spirit guiding me and leading me in everything I did and do, by reading my Bible over and over again—a choosing that I made to depend on Him, by a surrendering I did to let Him lead me even when it did not make sense. The Holy Spirit does the work, the teaching the learning the reprogramming, we just have to participate, we have to read our bibles, every single day.
