Standing in the kitchen making some coffee, I noticed my shadow was in the way of my seeing clearly what I was doing, so I glanced up and noticed the recessed lightbulb above the sink was burned out.
“Oh, that explains it… wonder how long that’s been burned out…” I asked myself.
I looked around the rest of the kitchen and the other lights and noticed that not one but two more were burned out…
“Well goodness, no wonder I cannot see in here lately,” I thought.
How long had they been burned out? Why didn’t I notice it? It’s not a huge deal, it’s just a lightbulb… but it wasn’t just one burned out— it was three.
I guess I’ve been too busy to notice with the project at work, the kids and the hustle…
Immediately I had this impression come to mind…
This is how it is with the things of the Lord sometimes. We get revelation of something wonderful and powerful, and the light shines so brightly in that area, things are so clearly, and we are so connected to the Lord in understanding, His light is all we can see.
But sometimes in our walk with the Lord, the lightbulb flickers a bit, and stops working in certain areas.
That one first, then another.
It’s not totally dark, by any means. But it is a subtle dimming of something we used to depend on burning brightly day to day.
We begin to notice shadows, we have to maybe squint, lean in, really focus on something now that we didn’t used to have to…
I cannot let busy distractions and to do’s steal my Light.
I cannot ignore when things seem a little dim…
I cannot let the subtleties of this hustle callous or cloud my vision.
I cannot allow my heart to become hard, I must continually stir myself up in the Lord.
I need to change the lightbulb.
I need to stop what I’m doing, climb up on the counter, pull the thing out, and find the problem.
Unplug it, blow on it, and plug it back in.
Take it apart.
Fix what is broken.
Replace it.
All you need to do is tend to it some, focus on it, put your attention to it…
Do whatever it takes to get the Light bright again.

“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”
